Volume 2, Number 19
Hello Friends,
I am sorry this is coming a little late, but the Dream Ride In The Flint Hills this weekend kind of consumed me. Wow! What a Ride it was. I didn’t think the weather could be any better than last year, but I think we topped that weather.
It was great to see everyone, and the hospitality that the Flying W gave was just tremendous. We saw a lot of old friends and met many new friends. The Best Of America By Horseback Team was there to film the ride, and we will be anxious to see it on RFD TV.
I am going to try to make the trail ride Oct.14 & 15th in Longford, Kansas. It looks like it is going to be a great weekend of riding. Kerry Kuhn will be there putting on informative clinics. If interested in joining in, give Bailey Perry a call at 785/388-2357 or Michelle Ware at 785/388-2532, or e-mail her at mware@eaglecom.net .
Richard Schrake will be coming to the area the weekend of Oct.28 & 29 at the Fairgrounds in Sedalia. Information is in the calendar of this issue.
Have you checked out our new websites yet? Go to www.betterhorsesnetwork.com and see the new look and information we are going to add. Also you can either go from betterhorsesnetwork or go to www.betterhorsesradio.com and listen to our current show, past shows, and see what is coming up.
I will be at Salina and Ellsworth, Kansas along with Higginsville, MO next week putting on Horse Health Fairs. Information is in the calendar, and I hope to you see you next week.
This Saturday, Oct.7th, is Premier Farm & Ranch’s Grand Opening in St. Joe, MO. It is held from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. I hope you can attend. Melissa and her staff do a great job. Their number is 816/232-1243.
Let me know if I can be of help.
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Horse Management Tip
To Blanket……Or Not To Blanket?
The answer is yes and no. Let’s start with the no. The horse has the ability to poof out his coat, thus providing him with a layer of air which gives him a layer of warm air next to his skin. A blanket will flatten his coat and sometimes depending on the blanket can make him colder than if he wore no blanket at all. If a horse is healthy and has access to good hay, he will not need to wear a blanket in a stall or in a pasture.
Now, the yes part. If you ride often, show, or it is an older horse, then bring out the blankets. Notice I said blankets, not blanket. Your horse will need a nighttime blanket, a turnout blanket and rain wear. All these need to be kept in good condition so your horse will not get tangled in broken straps or get sore spots from an ill-fitting blanket.
Remember, a horse’s coat is governed by the amount of daylight he receives and not the temperature. So when the days begin to grow shorter, he will start to grow a winter coat even though the days are still warm.
