Volume 4, Number 9

Hello, Friends!

I am sorry I am a little late with this newsletter -- it seems I am still recovering from our First Annual Spring Dream Ride In the Flint Hills. Wow! What a weekend. With us having severe weather the night before and tremendously windy and cold weather on Friday when we got to the ride, I had no idea on how the ride was going to turn out. We had a total of 60 riders on the ride, and it was a great weekend. I saw a lot of old friends and met new ones. On Saturday the weather started out chilly and windy but did nothing but get better throughout the weekend. Our Cowboy Church Service on Sunday was very special, the music and message was tremendous. We will have pictures up on our website in a few days.

I hope that you can make our 9th Annual Fall Dream Ride In The Flint Hills this September 26th, 27th, & 28th at the Flying W Ranch. The ride and fellowship is tremendous. We eat a little, ride a little, and then eat some more. We still have room for this one, so see the information inside and contact Suzan Barnes at The Grand Central Hotel to make your reservations. Her number is 620/273-6763. Also check it out on our website www.betterhorsesnetwork.com.

Also, don’t forget our First Annual Old West Cowboy Days Trail Ride this June 7th & 8th, at the Burkdoll Brothers Ranch near Bush City, Kansas. I just signed the great Cowboy Singer, J Parson, for this event. Bush City is about 15 miles southeast of Garnett, Kansas. E-Mail me or give me a call at 785/418-6047.

We have a special weekend coming up on May 30, 31st, and June 1, with the Shawn Flarida and Brent Wright Reining Clinic to be held at Eby Ranch near Louisburg, Kansas. On Friday night, the 30th, we have a Special HOW Meeting with Brent and Shawn doing reining demonstrations along with Rebecca Rigdon, Dressage Trainer and Judge, doing a Dressage Demonstration. This is going to be a great evening. On Saturday evening after the first day of the clinic, we are going to have a special evening dedicated to Brent Wright and Shawn Flarida. We want to show tribute to Brent for reaching a milestone in earning over a $1,000,000 in the NRHA. Also we want to celebrate getting Shawn Flarida to join the Purina Team and for his accomplishments. If you want to attend the evening and not the clinic, the cost for a steak dinner is $25.00. If you want reservations for this evening call me at 785/418-6047 or call Suzan Berschauer at 913/837-8253. Along with the great meal and fellowship, you will be hearing the music of J Parson, great Cowboy Singer. Don’t miss this weekend.

My deadline for our Summer Edition of Better Horses Network is this Friday, May 9th.  Call me if you are interested in advertising.

I also want to congratulate the team of Randy Peterson, Adrian Vogel, and Grady Gibb who are considered one of the best Ranch Rodeo Teams in the country . . . congratulations on your victory last week at Moline, KS!

Make sure you check out www.omoleneuniversity.com. This is a real neat website full of equine education. Also gives you a chance to earn free feed and stuff.

We again have available Purina Strategy® Feeding Trials to give you an opportunity to try this product and see how it performs. With the times being with such high prices on everything, still the best buy for your horses is Strategy®.  E-Mail me or give me a call and let us put your barn on the #1 Feed in the Industry, Strategy® .

I hope to see you in the next few weeks.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

NEED YOUR HELP!   STOLEN SADDLES!

Please help Barb McGuire find some saddles that were stolen from her backyard barn on 1/2/08 south of Louisburg, KS.  Both are western style.

One has a Black Rhino emblem on it with the number 0600-24 stamped on the flap.  The other is a Circle Y barrel racing saddle with light green suede seat.
(Click Here to view pictures of saddles).

If you have any information to help solve this crime, please call the police department who will link to local law enforcement familiar with the case.  Barb will
give monetary reward for information leading to the recovery of these saddles.

Please contact Barb at (913) 377-3106 or e-mail barb.mcguire@hotmail.com.  Thank you for any assistance you can give!

PURINA MILLS DREAM RIDE IN THE FLINT HILLS

We had some great comments on our Spring Dream Ride at the Flying W Ranch in the Flint Hills May 2nd through May 4th.  Marti Sheetz was kind enough to send us this nice note:

"It was windy windy windy on Friday but only windy windy on Saturday.  Horses were acting crazy but no accidents.  I am so glad.  The cold set in for the nights and there was frost on the ground Sunday morning when we woke up.  Sunday did warm up to be a beautiful day.  The whole weekend was incredible.

We stopped in Wichita and picked up generator for the trailer.  That was a great idea because we would have been very cold when the batteries ran down.  This was the first time we had used our trailer.  It felt so good to be able to go into the trailer out of the wind and where it was warm.  I can't wait till the next ride.

We had a GREAT weekend.  The most wonderful people go on these rides.  We saw old friends and met new ones.   Some of the sponsors of the ride went with us and were a joy to be around.  I hope they decide to join us again and we meet on the trail down the road.

The Flint Hills were just starting to green up and you could see for miles.  It was beautiful.  We had steak on Saturday night and wonderful entertainment.  Church on Sunday morning was very inspirational.  You could feel the spirit of God all around us.  God's hand was on each of the speakers/singers as they led us and guided us with God's words.

I hope everyone else had as good a weekend as we did."

                                                                                                        Marti

Horse Management Tip

Trail Riding Tip: 'Keep Control'

Horses that lunge up the side of a hill can be fun -- but can also be dangerous in the wrong conditions . . . especially when you are riding with many other levels of riders. It can cause other horses to get too excited and scared if you run up the hill past someone else.

Take the time to teach your horse to walk up and down hills slowly, and be sure that you can always control the speed of your horse in trail riding conditions. Keeping that control will help keep everyone safe on the trail.

Horsey Treat Recipe

May brings May flowers!  Celebrate the beautiful Spring season with your favorite mare with this recipe called:

J Mare's Delight

In a big bowl, mix:
6 cups bran
2 cups oatmeal
2 cups cracked corn
4-6 cups flour
1 cup sugar
2 tblsp. salt
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 eggs
16 oz. sweetened apple juice
2/3 cup molasses
6 tblsp. corn oil

Then just roll the dough into one- or two-inch balls and bake at 300o for 25 minutes or until they are dry and crisp.
(The dough is very sticky -- it helps to dip your hands in water periodically while handling it.)
